“A smile is the best thing you can put on your face.” A lady walked by saying this to me, smiling. I had given her a warm smile, seeing her, and that was what I got in return. This event sure did lift my spirit. I was happy that I was able to bring smile to someone’s lips.
I believe in simple acts of life; a small bit of joy, a small act of kindness, a simple act of appreciation. I think joys in life are similar to short commercials; they are a lot shorter than that, though. I think the one who enjoys life is the one who appreciates every moment one lives, no matter how insignificant. Think about watching the sunset from the bank of the Bayou or maybe watching the whole world go by from the top of the library. They might not be worth much now but twenty years from today you might feel sleepless one night, from all the work and the stress, and you might start thinking about random events in the past, things you could have done, you should have done and what not. But in that moment you will suddenly start remembering your college life and start thinking about your friends, times spent with them, the sunset from bank of Bayou or maybe watching the whole world go by from the top of the library. Will you not feel nostalgic? Would you not want to relive that moment? What if you never got half an hour free to experience these things? What if you just walked by these moments without giving any thought?
That is why I appreciate every little moment I can scavenge. I exchange smiles with random people. Though it might sound creepy, I have seen this bring smiles to their faces most of the time. The door you helped to open for a random person, the stranger you shared your umbrella with, might turn out to be the most important person of your life. The homeless guy you gave your tees might remember you for the rest of his life. If it only takes these simple acts to change the world, would you not make the effort?
