The past week has been intense to say the least, but I promise you, a silver lining exists.
Many of us thought that Hillary Clinton had the presidency in the bag, but, as everyone knows, the phrase and title "President-Elect Donald Trump" is our new reality.
People have reacted in so many different ways as they deal with their mixed emotions from the election. Some decided to riot, some peacefully protested and others have tried to internally process it. These reactions will probably go on for awhile, as we await what a Trump White House will look like.
The election has consumed us all, and for good reason. The media has been all over it and if you log onto Facebook or Twitter, you cannot get away from it. However, we are not hearing enough of the history and good things that have come from this year's election.
We cannot forget that people voted in some new Senate and House members. These women are amazing individuals who have already made history. So, here is a rundown of how historical this election truly was.
Senate:
Maggie Hansen (D) from New Hampshire is the third woman ever to be elected into the Senate from this state.
Tammy Duckworth (D) from Illinois, the first disabled woman in the House, has now been elected to the Senate.
Kamala Harris (D) from California will be the second African American woman to be in the Senate.
Catherine Cortez Masto (D) from Nevada will be the first Latina woman to be elected to the Senate, and the first woman in general to be elected in Nevada.
Misty Snow (D) from Utah was the first transgender individual to run for Senate with the backing of a major political party. Even though she lost, this is history.
House:
Pramila Jayapal (D) from Washington will be the first Indian-American woman to serve in the House.
Governor:
Kate Brown (D) from Oregon is the first openly bisexual governor in US history.
These races and outcomes are huge for America, as equality inches closer to becoming a reality. There are a record number of women in Congress after this election and this is what some of our focus should be on.
There is a silver lining to this election, and we will all get through this as long as we show love and compassion for each other, as Americans.
