“Make your bed every morning before you leave. There’s nothing better than coming home after a long day to a made-up bed.” This piece of advice was passed down to me from my grandmother at a young age. At the time, I thought she was just telling me something stupid to try and help my mom get me to clean my room and make my bed. To be completely honest, I never actually listened to her advice until the middle of my senior year, as foolish as it may seem. But as adulthood drifted violently around the corner in my general direction I quickly realized how much the little things in life actually mattered. As applications, scholarships, responsibilities, GPA, family and balancing friends began to feel as heavy as a ton of bricks on my very shoulders, I learned there truly is nothing better than coming home to a made bed and a cup of warm coffee.
You would think such a silly little piece of advice would escape someone’s mind with time. However, I still follow this piece of advice religiously. It doesn’t matter how awful or exhausting my day can be (especially as a stressed out nursing major hours away from home), my bed becomes my favorite escape when it’s nicely made. I can’t scientifically prove that it makes my bed more comfortable or makes me feel better but it personally makes a difference.
My grandma has always had a knack for saying weird little things that stick in people's minds. She can calm any storm and take charge of any situation. She has made amazing things in her life from nothing. So believe me when I say, this woman knows what she is talking about! I have so many different memories with my grandma and our deep talks growing up were some of my favorite memories. She would tell me stories all the time about life picking in the fields, and her hard work, and always mentioned how good it felt to lay in her made bed after.
All in all, I owe my grandma a huge thanks. She is one of the closest people to me in my family, and her advice is always regarded a little more important than others. I have mentally tested and proven her advice as something that helps me. Even though it may seem ridiculous, or minute, in the grand scheme of things, it makes a huge difference and I will always remember it throughout my life.
