Pittsford, N.Y. is a suburb of the city of Rochester known for it's wealth, but not always in a good way. However, Pittsford is also recognized for having prestigious schools, a great education system and an overall a feeling of safety -- thus, making the town a great place to raise a family. There are many unique aspects of this suburban town, and overall we can say that we were lucky to grow up there.
1. Mendon V. Sutherland.
Back in the day, Pittsford was unified. There was only one high school for the town, but now there are two. Mendon High School and Sutherland High School which are less than a 10-minute drive apart. It's confusing because you are rivals in some aspects, but many of your good friends go to the opposite school. Students who play more than one sport might be on the same team with people from the other school, but then are the biggest rivals in another sport. It's a healthy rivalry though because at the end of the day you are still a strong community and that's pretty great.
2. Garbage plates.
Rochester is the home of the garbage plate. The concept sounds unappealing. Who wants all of their food piled on top of each other? However, it is quite delicious and in Pittsford, they are all the rave. A trip to Hungry's every now and then is a must.
3. Wegmans.
To every one else, Wegmans is just a grocery store. But to you, it is a lifestyle. Wegmans is the place to go when you are bored, sitting on your couch, a stop after prom night when you're still in dresses and tuxes, and a place you go with friends for fun. You have a strong attachment to Wegmans. So when you go away to college and people do not know what it is you are slightly offended. It usually leads to an in depth conversation explaining just how amazing it is. Even if you have one by school, chances are the Pittsford one is still the best. You can't wait to go home because you miss it that much.
4. The Canal.
It's literally in our backyards. Something we probably take for granted. It's lined with some of the cutest stores, cafes and restaurants. There are always people out walking their dogs, biking, or going for runs. Since you grew up next to it, you don't think of all the history behind it, but it's pretty cool that it's centered in our town.
5. VBC.
Are you really home for break if you don't go to the Village Bakery and post a picture of it? One of the newest additions to the Village of Pittsford. You swear by it. They have the best baked goods, egg sandwiches, lattes, french toast, etc. You are also guaranteed to run into at least once person you know every time you go there.
6. The Mall.
Eastview Mall. Although it is technically not located in Pittsford, since there is not much to do in our town, we end up there. When you are looking for some entertainment a trip to the mall is usually where you'll go. Even if you don't want to spend any money, you'll still go just for something to do. Otherwise it's the movies, but you already went there once this week.
7. Pittsford Farms Dairy.
The most amazing ice cream. The line out the door every night speaks for itself. With all homemade flavors, baked goods, and the best chocolate milk... this place is one of your favorites.
8. Powers Farm Market.
Whenever you're home for break, especially in the fall, this is your first stop. With the tall tepees, housing hundreds of carved pumpkins, great baked goods, and animal petting. Is it really fall in Pittsford if you don't go to Powers and take pics?
Although sometimes you might feel as though you grew up in a bubble, Pittsford has shaped the person you have become. So yeah whenever people ask you where you are from, you're proud to say Pittsford. Even though it's usually followed by a snide remark like, "Oh, you're from Pittsford." Hell, yeah, I am. And I'm extremely thankful.
