Have you ever had a girlfriend (or boyfriend) that appeared to have too many clothes? How do you really know what is too much? Below are some signs that you, or another person you know, may have too many clothes.
1. You have three separate walk-in closets, in separate bedrooms, that are all filled to the maximum capacity.
The closets may not be large, grand-sized closets, but if they can hold in excess of 100 shirts and 20 pants we will consider them to be a separate closet. According to this rule, you will already have over 300 shirts and 60 pants.
An individual must assess their own rate of how often they will wear each item of clothing. A frequency rate of 12 means that each shirt or pair of pants will be worn once a month. If there are 300 shirts in your closet, your frequency rate would be 1.2. This means you can wear each shirt 1.2 times per year. If your number is this low you should ask yourself, how many shirts do I even wear in a year? It is likely that will only wear 30-45 shirts throughout the year and the remaining 255-270 shirts are forgotten.
2. You find clothes in the back of your closet with the tag still attached (from two years ago).
According to government consumer studies, the average American spends $1700 on clothing articles each year, with females easily pushing the bar to $3400. The studies also show that a typical female will have over 95 items in their closet but only wear 45% of those items on a yearly basis. Now ask yourself; how many clothes have you bought, stuffed in the back of the closet, and forgot about them?
3. You consider purchasing hangers in lots of 100.
The majority of Americans will purchase between 30 and 60 clothing items each year. Out of these new purchases most come in seasonal times and a few items are discarded out of the closet for different reasons. If you find yourself purchasing at least 2 items of clothing each week, you will soon discover that hangers are a lot cheaper when purchased in bulk. Even if 5 to 10 percent of your clothing items are discarded you will still be stuck with over 90 new clothes every year.
4. Your typical wash involves more new clothes than actual dirty clothes.
This sign can also be shown if there is a basket in the laundry room, next to your washing machine, exclusively for for disposal of price tags.
5. You stopped hanging up all of your clothes and instead toss them on top of a pile established in another bedroom.
Old habits are hard to break. Once you have acquired too many clothes to hang up you started to pile your clothes up on top of each other. If you can no longer see the floor, or even know what is in the pile, you may have too many clothes to manage.
