Growing up in New York for my entire life, it was quite an adjustment to suddenly be going to school in North Carolina and some aspects of southern culture. What do you mean the phrase "bless your heart" isn't necessarily a good thing? Did I actually just get asked if I was a Yankee? Here are eight signs that you are in the south after living in the north!
1. What is a Bojangles?
I had also never eaten at Chick- Fil-A before coming to school either.
2. Gas is so much cheaper!
I get a little excited everytime I pass a gas station, just because the prices are so much lower!
3. Yes, I say my vowels differently.
People always find it interesting when I say "water", "dog" and "coffee". I can't even tell you how many times people would hear me say one thing and automatically say, "you are not from here."
4. What's the big deal that UNC and Duke are playing each other?
This pertains mostly to me being a student in North Carolina, but I just didn't get the rivalry. I constantly get asked what side I'm on. Basketball just isn't a big deal where I am from.
5. What are hush puppies?
When I said I had never had one before, my friends looked at me as if I was crazy.
6. Sweet tea versus iced tea
When I said I wanted an iced tea, I was met with looks of confusion. When I said that I can put sweetener in my iced tea, I was met with even more looks of confusion. Why not just drink sweet tea?
7. Weather
Unlike a lot of my classmates, I'm not putting on a sweatshirt in the 60 degree weather.
8. Small talk
Since going to school, I have become a lot better in my abilities to make small talk with just about anyone.
