Signs You Are Constantly Overthinking
Joao Silas

Overthinking – "Something is on your mind and you continuously think about it, the thought gets deeper and you start thinking about circumstances, events and possibilities that could be... in the end you have too many far out thoughts racing through your head." Overthinking is a common practice of mine. It is uncontrollable and sudden. You don't even realize you are doing it until it is too late.

You start with a common concept and suddenly a simple thought becomes this whole ordeal. Your head becomes full with worries and conspiracy theories of your own making. Even the simplest task will cause an immense amount of thoughts to swarm through your head. Overthinking is common; if you can relate to any of these signs below, don't worry even though I know you will overthink overthinking.

1. Decisions are impossible

You pick an option but constantly second guess yourself causing you to scramble between all the choices and in the end, not being able to choose.

2. You constantly assume people are talking about you

Not because you think you are all that, but because there is something wrong with you like you have food stuck in your teeth or your underwear is showing.

3. Getting up during class is your biggest fear

"They are all going to look at me and watch me walk out of the room, they are going to time me, I'm going to disrupt the class."

4. Being in charge of the AUX chord is stressful

What if you pick the wrong song? What if they make fun of my music? What if everyone hates the song? What if it kills the vibe? On and on and on...

5. Sorry is the main word of your vocabulary

I'm sorry about.... I'm sorry I did that.... I'm sorry for being sorry..

6. Sending a text...

Will I sound desperate if I say this? Is an exclamation point too much? What if they don't answer?

7. Receiving a text...

Constantly deciphering the meanings of "K", "Ok", and "Okay"

8. Never knowing if you should say hi to someone you know

Do you say hi to an acquaintance? What if they don't say hi back? What if they think I'm rude for not saying hi?

9. Your mood can change suddenly

You get excited and then start the process of overthinking which then replaces the excitement with fear or uncertainty.

10. Being home alone can turn into a horror movie

What if I get murdered and no one is here to save me? What if a robber breaks in?

11. Constantly sending screenshots

Your friend can tell you exactly what to say so you can't "mess it up."

12. You notice if the slightest thing changes

His smile isn't as big, is he breaking up with me? Why didn't she send a smiley face? Did I do something wrong?

13. Rehearsing what you are going to say in your head before you say it

Because if you mess up you are going to look stupid.

14. Overthinking everything

Every little thing causes your mind to spiral out of control. But it is okay because you aren't crazy, you are just an overthinker.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
