October is domestic violence awareness month, abbreviated as DVAM. It's a month for spreading knowledge and offering resources to survivors who may be stuck in an unhealthy relationship. It's a month to remember those who have lost their lives because of domestic violence. It's a month to honor those who have found their way out of the darkness, and into the light of a healthier life. It's a month to support those who are still fighting the fight in their relationships, and who are struggling to find a way out. Most importantly, it is a month to recognize the reality that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men experience abuse at some point in their lives. The narrative must change, but the only way to do that is to ensure we are promoting healthy relationships and informing young individuals of what a healthy relationship looks like.
