Signs the Holiday Season Has Arrived

As the weather gets colder and the year comes to an end, it can only mean one thing; the holiday season is fast approaching! With two months of endless holiday music, weekends filled with exhausting shopping trips and food that is to die for, this is the best time of the year. Take a look below for the the tell-tale signs that the Holiday season is just around the corner!

1. The cold weather has arrived. The time has come to trade in puffer vests and riding boots for winter coats and Uggs.

2. Your shopping trips are becoming more frequent. With only two months to finish all your shopping, it’s time to step up your game, which means less shopping for yourself and more gift buying for others!

3. Family reunion dates have been set. There are more family gatherings in the next few months, than there are in the whole year. Seeing family means it’s time to come up with answers to all your favorite questions (i.e. do you have a boyfriend, what do you want to do with your future and how are you doing in school).

4. All you can think about is food — lots and lots of food. Although living off of Ramen noodles and frozen vegetables has been fun, nothing — and I mean nothing — is better than home cooked meals during the holidays.

5. Holiday cheer dominates every store you enter. Stores adapt incredibly fast to the changing seasons, and it seems like an overnight transition from Halloween to Thanksgiving and Christmas. Before you’ve even thought about decorating for the holidays, retail stores will deck the hall with boughs of holly…

6. Starbucks brings back its signature holiday drinks. From peppermint mochas to PSLs, nothing is better than a hot, holiday themed drink (in a pretty red cup, of course)!

7. You have an inexplicable need to indulge in holiday movies. "Elf," "It’s a Wonderful Life" and "The Polar Express" are all fair game.

8. You look forward to attending ugly Christmas sweater parties and not being judged. Well, you might not be able to avoid judgment for wearing your favorite holiday sweater (ya know, the one that lights up as you walk) but at least you won’t be alone!

9. No matter where you are, you can’t escape holiday music. Hearing holiday tunes in October can be annoying, but by late November you actually start to enjoy the genre. Before you know it, holiday music slowly creeps into each and every one of your music playlists.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
