11 Things People From Cupertino, CA Will Definitely Recognize

Cupertino, California: the 11th wealthiest city in the nation with a population of over 60,000 people, or what some of us are so fortunate to call home. Perfectly located in the center of the Bay Area with short drives to the popular surrounding areas such as Willow Glen, Los Gatos, Los Altos, and Santana Row- Cupertino is the place to be. We are all so unbelievably lucky to have grown up here, and there are certain aspects that every person from Cupertino can relate to.

1. Yes, Apple.

That phone you are holding or the Mac you are reading this article on originated from Apple headquarters located in Cupertino. It's a pretty big deal, we know. Also, we're all patiently awaiting the arrival of the "Mothership," Apple's new and improved headquarters. We've grown up surrounded by the many buildings, all with a different color apple header in front, and are all pretty used to living next to one of the most important companies in the world.

2. Pearl Tea

It's just something you're always in the mood for. Whether its Fantasia, Verde, or the mouthwatering T-Pumps - having pearl tea once a week is just a norm. You grew up drinking it, and you probably will never stop because it is so freaking good.

3. Diversity

Cupertino is simply a giant melting pot. We all grew up emerged in the cultures of our friend's and their families, and we do not know any different. We are all very familiar with holidays such as Chinese New Year or Diwali, and none of us would change this unique way that we were raised - and one that makes Cupertino stand out from the norm.

4. Variety of food

Vietnamese, Japanese, Indian, Korean, Pakistani, Mexican, Greek- you know it. People from Cupertino are the opposite of picky-eaters- we love food from every culture. And you can find the largest range of options in this small city. Whether you're in the mood for pho, ramen, curry and naan, gyros, or sashimi- you'll find it here.

5. Valco Mall

This depressing little mall has been around since any of us can remember. Although AMC did provide a new, fresh option for entertainment, we all try to avoid it as much as possible, yet simultaneously we are all curious if it ever will make a comeback.

6. Deer Hollow Farm

Whether you came here on field trips, grew up coming with your family, or still go for hikes on the trails, everyone loves to come visit these beautiful viewpoints and animal-filled farm during any season of the year.

7. Whole Foods

What is it, like the biggest one in Northern California or something? This place huge, and although it is deemed as "Whole Paycheck," it always seems to be crowded and bumbling. People were very excited when it made its appearance in town as well, whether they like to admit it or not.

8. The Donut Wheel

Whether you think the donuts here are good or not, chances are you have in fact eaten a donut from the Donut Wheel. It is the perfect place to hangout after middle school, or come to on a Sunday morning after church - the 24/7 open hour rule doesn't hurt either.

9. The loss of Blockbuster

The amazing wonderland that we would all rent movies at as a child was unfortunately replaced by no other than Chuckie Cheeses, something that most of us will never forgive or forget. R.I.P., Cupertino Blockbuster.

10. Sunday Flea Markets

Held in the parking lot of De Anza college on the first Sunday of every month, Cupertino residents of all ages come together to eat and shop for fresh food and explore old treasures and antiques. It is definitely something that most people look forward to, and definitely gives a glimpse to Cupertino's character.

11. Memorial Park

Whether you have spent time at the Quinlan center, celebrated the 4th of July, played on the various playgrounds, or fed the geese swimming in the ponds, everyone can recollect tons of memories from their childhood here.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
