GMO is an acronym for Genetically Modified Organisms, this means the genes of the plant have been alternated in a lab to improve the quality of the produce, which allows the plants to grow without much stress from weed or pest pressure. Genetic modification of our food is somewhat like insurance for food security, farmers are able to produce large amounts of food in a small piece of land with limited resources i.e. water and sometimes finances.
While many people obsess over organic food, they have no clue what is or is not genetically modified and unfortunately become victims of over priced products. Just because a label says a product is "non-GMO and contains no hormones or antibiotics" it doesn't really mean that it doesn't have any. According to the USDA, organic food should be grown avoiding most synthetic materials, for instance pesticides and antibiotics, using agricultural methods that conserve the environment. This does not mean that no pesticides or antibiotics are used!
Everything in agriculture is carefully inspected and regulated so that it does not pose a threat to human health. Pesticides and herbicides are specifically made for pests and weeds and they deteriorate before it reaches the market.
I am hoping to raise more awareness about the positive impact of genetically modified food on the exponentially growing population. Imagine if we all had to leave our jobs and everyday lifestyle to work on "organically" growing our food, that is the only way it will work to ensure everyone has a decent meal.
Where will we grow our food with the constantly increasing urban sprawl?
Thank you genetically modified food! Thank you Farmers!
