Sigma Nu's Survivors Basketball Tournament

In the upper gym at IM circle 17 teams gathered to participate in the first annual Sigma Nu Survivors 3v3 Basketball Tournament where the proceeds go to the American Cancer Society as well as St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Philanthropy chair for Sigma Nu and sophomore at Michigan State Ed Pavlovsky organized the tournament with help from Landen Hinds, a candidate for Sigma Nu. The "survivor" in the title comes from the brothers of Sigma Nu who have been diagnosed with cancer while at MSU: Sean Maher, a junior, after missing a semester to battle the disease, and Peter Crane, a senior. Both of these gentlemen love basketball and participated in some way at the event this year.

"It means a lot to donate to a cause which directly fights a disease that has so closely affected our fraternity," said Jake Burr, a senior at MSU and member of Sigma Nu. "With two members of Sigma Nu recently diagnosed with cancer it feels great to put on such an event."

The event took place on Sunday November 16 from noon to 2 p.m. and consisted of 3v3 basketball with one sub on each team. Teams went head to head on half court with check in a bracket style elimination. Each game was intense and left both teams gassed by the end.

Signing up for the tournament was open however a good majority of the teams had at least one Sigma Nu affiliated player on their squad. In the final round it was Rubio Tuesdays versus the Doughboys in a first-to-15 game with no time limit.

The Doughboys took an early lead but ended up slowing down after their 9th point. Rubio Tuesdays took advantage of this and went on a streak scoring 8 points straight to win the game 15-9.

Since this was still the first year the tournament has been held there were no trophies or t-shirts for the victors, but Rubio Tuesdays member Alex Dutta, Senior at MSU, had other ideas.

"Fine, we'll just make our own T-shirts then," said Dutta.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
