I don’t want you to get things twisted, I am no Barney Stinson. I do not watch movies and root for the bad guys. I know people like Johnny Lawrence and Hans Gruber are villains, but my guy Sid does not share the same company.
Sid from “Toy Story” is nothing more than a misunderstood kid who wants to be loved.
People out there like to classify him as a bully, but who does Sid really bully? There’s no evidence of him harassing Andy. The only people Sid bullies in this movie are toys. I repeat, TOYS! Inanimate objects that Sid has no idea are actually alive.
I’m sure if Sid knew these toys had souls and feelings he wouldn’t be taking off their heads and limbs. However, he does not, so he chooses to have fun with toys by performing operations on them that show creativity and the potential of a future doctor, not a villain.
The real root of Sid’s harassment of inconsequential toys in their lifeless and meaningless state is him calling out for attention. Based on the amount of time Sid has to skateboard to Pizza Planet and strap toys to rockets in his yard, we can conclude that his parents aren’t around too often. Sid isn’t bullying these toys just for enjoyment, but to have the father we never really see notice him.
Sid just wants to be loved. Unfortunately, Woody and Buzz ruin any last chance he has at love. Woody leading the toys in Sid's backyard to come to life and scare him is a turning point in Sid’s life that he can never recover from.
The impact of this event takes Sid from a slight misfit to the crazy kid talking about how toys came alive and attacked him. This is something he will never stop talking about and will always be haunted by. The therapy bills are going to be through the roof and his psyche will never be the same.
Sid, the potential future doctor, scholar, and brain surgeon will most likely spend the rest of his days in a mental institution because of stupid toys like Woody and Buzz. The toys are supposed to be there for kids and if that means getting strapped to a rocket, then stay on that rocket Buzz. I don’t think I’m too crazy to say that human lives matter more than toy lives.
Next time you watch “Toy Story” I hope you feel good about yourself when you cheer on these toys ruining a child’s life. As for me, I will continue to love Sid, a misunderstood genius who just wanted to play rough with his toys and get a hug from his dad.
