Sick at School

A College Student's Worst Nightmare

23
Sick at School

It is that time of year again when it seems like, everywhere on campus, there is someone dealing with some kind of illness. These illnesses spread easily due to the shared living spaces, working spaces, and eating spaces of a couple thousand people. Throw in the facts that: some people's hygiene is less than ideal, you live less than 5 feet away from another human being, fatigue and stress weaken your immune system, and you have students who are pretty much guaranteed to get sick with something over cold and flu season. Here are some reasons why it stinks to be sick while living on campus:

1. Your mom is not here

There is no one to come in to check on you after work with ginger ale or cough drops (unless you have amazing friends). An lets be honest, moms are so much better than Web MD. It is really hard to not miss your momma when you are sick.

2. You run the risk of getting all of your friends sick

When you live five feet away from a roommate and everyone else is in the same hallway, things spread pretty easily, It is better to quarantine yourself until you are better, no matter how much it sucks to be alone in your room.

3. You have no motivation to do homework but can't fall behind

All your body and brain can handle is movies (thanks for the free HBO Go Le Moyne), but your GPA requires that you are a perfectly attentive student.

4. You can't tell for yourself when you are sick enough to miss class and when to fight through it

Does the professor take attendance? Do you have an A? Is there anyone you can get notes from? Can you breathe? Can you walk and hold yourself up for an hour and fifteen minutes? Will going to class literally kill you? These are the questions you must ask before emailing your professor.

5. By the time you feel well enough to eat, the dining hall is closed

There is nothing worse then when you didn't think you should eat until after the dining hall is closed. So you are left to starve or snack.

6. If you can eat you don't because you don't want to walk to the dining hall

Whose bright idea was it to put Harrison and St. Mary's across the street? It is too far to walk to when you are ill.

7. You have to miss all of the fun things going on

Halloween bingo, shopping with friends, and just getting away in general become impossible.

8. Somehow movie marathons are not as fun at school

I want MY couch, MY dog, MY mom, and MY movies, Although Le Moyne's HBO GO subscription is pretty rad.

9. There is nothing worse than having the stomach bug in a public bathroom

I don't want strangers in the bathroom as I lay on the floor dying.

10. You know that the second you are better you have to disinfect everything

And change your toothbrush. You don't want to get sick again.

11. The health center is so dang far away

Why in the name of all that is good and holy did they decide to make sick people walk a quarter mile up a hill to get to see a medical professional?

12. Lets be serious, there is no circumstances where being sick is fun

But at least you will be better soon!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
