If you have a sibling- you know what I mean. You know that indescribable bond between you and your brother/sister.
When I was two years old, I went to my grandparents house for the weekend and came back to a new baby sister. It took me awhile to warm up to the idea of sharing my mom, but the years to follow proved to be some of the best so far.
It was clear from the beginning that my sister and I were quite opposite. I leaned to talk before walk, and she learned to walk before talk. I was the lead singer and she was the back up dancer. I was the teacher she was the student. And so on and so forth. However, these differences resulted in the most balanced relationship I have ever had, and maybe will ever experience.
There is no definition for a sibling bond. There is nothing comparable to this incredible sense of love and connection to another human being. About four out of five Americans grow up with a sibling, and most siblings share almost 50% of the same genes. But biology has nothing to do with this bond.
Sibling bonds can be characterized by a few sentiments: these are our most enduring relationships, siblings are our best teachers, they thrive on differences, they understand each other, and they support each other.
But, arguably the best thing about the sibling bond is having a built in best friend. Someone you don't have to put on real clothes and leave the house to see. These friendships are also unique and are marked by special quirks, such as-
Intuitive understanding
When your mom says something annoying, or someone at the grocery store has a heinous outfit- you can look at each other and just know what the other is thinking.
Similar Food Cravings
When your look over to you sibling at 2 in the morning and you both know a McDonald's run is in your near future.
"Corresponding" Interests
When they audition for the musical because you're a theatre major. Even though their strong suit is JROTC.
Being Weird
When you're in those moods where you just geek out, odds are your brother/sister is by your side out-weirding you.
Strong Selfie Game
Whether you're actually taking a cute picture or face swapping, your selfies game is never as strong as when you're with your brother or sister.
Unique Displays of Affection
Whether is be a high five, a slap in the back of the neck, hair pulling, side hugs or a poke to the side, we show affection in odd ways, but it's always genuine.
With that being said, go give your brother/sister a hug. Or shoot them a text at least.
