Social media is pretty expensive for impulse buyers such as myself. The amount of things I have bought that I would not have even known existed is pretty ridiculous. The latest of these types of purchases is a subscription to Shudder.com. Shudder is essentially Netflix if Netflix only featured horror movies. So, this is a horror movie lover’s dream, right? It kind of is.
The site features some of the most rare and obscure horror movies ever made. Be warned that some of the content found within can be extremely disturbing and offensive. There is not much offered for the squeamish. The titles span across multiple countries and decades so there is an insanely large variety of movies, many of which I have never even heard of, and I consider myself to be a horror movie buff. I have thoroughly enjoyed the first week which is offered to anyone as a free trial. After the first 7 days, members can continue with their description for $4.99 per month.
The format is pretty simple. There are featured films to choose from which appear when a member first logs in. If nothing jumps out at you, there are a number of collections to choose from. The collections are cool because they group movies with similar themes or monster-types into the same collection. For example, if ghost movies are your guilty pleasure, then the “Haunted Habitations” collection may be right up your alley. There is also the option to search for specific titles. However, if you are not a dictionary of obscure horror movies from different countries, you may not have any hits in your search results. When I think of the horror classics, I think of “Halloween,” “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” “The Exorcist,” “Friday the 13th,” etc. These titles will not be found here unless they are planning something for Halloween and just have not added these films in. Even without the familiar horror titles, I find this site to be a bargain at $4.99/month if you are a horror movie fan.
That may be the only downfall to the subscription. I love the idea of having all of these obscure and probably hard-to-find horror movies ready to stream to my TV, but some of the campy favorites would round this site out quite nicely. I am sure it is not up to me and I am even more sure that this site was not created for tweens to watch the Scream trilogy on repeat.
I just wanted to add one last thing just for full disclosure. The content of some of the films available is extremely graphic and the filmmakers probably did not have your feelings in mind when they created these pictures. For example, “Nekromantik” and “Nekromantik 2” are German films that are available on Shudder.com. There are certainly a number of films that do not deal with obscene and offensive materials, but you have been warned. Now go forth, shudder and chill.
