If you need more ideas about what shows you could possibly get into, here's a list of some shows that I love and that you might not have heard of. All of these are currently available on Netflix, so you can binge immediately!
1. "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend"
I personally believe that this is one of the greatest, most inventive, and funniest shows in existence. Don't let the title fool you. "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" is all about deconstructing that term. It's about a woman named Rebecca who moves from New York to California because of a chance encounter with a guy she dated in summer camp when they were 16. It does a great job of covering the topic of mental illness with care while also adding lots of comedy. Also, it's a musical! Throughout the seasons, they have parodied countless genres, musicals, and artists with skill and hilarity.
2. "Sense8"
This show has one of the most interesting concepts of any show I've seen. It follows the story of eight different characters, who live in different cities across the world, whose minds become interconnected. They can communicate and even take over each others' bodies, which really comes in handy since there's an organization dedicated to finding people like them and killing them. It's suspenseful, dramatic, and fascinating to see all the different plots unfold and intertwine during the two seasons. But fair warning, this is definitely not a PG show.
3. "Trollhunters"
Though technically a kid's show, my 65-year-old dad and I got addicted to this show. It's about a teenager named Jim who becomes the first human Trollhunter - a warrior who protects trolls and humans by fighting off evil trolls and other monsters. Though the beginning follows a very stereotypical hero's journey - normal kid that wants to be extraordinary finds a medallion, becomes the chosen one, has to train to fight bad guys, etc. - everything that comes afterward is original and super creative! Also, the "sidekick" characters are really strong. They're individuals, not just there to support the hero, and that's one of the main things that makes this show so great and fun to watch.
4. "Jane the Virgin"
I love how this show is a soap opera that makes fun of soap operas! It follows the story of Jane, a virgin who accidentally gets artificially inseminated after a mistake at the gynecologist. One of the best things about this show is that it's aware of how utterly ridiculous it is and embraces it! They make sure to hit every telenovela trope and explore them in new and hilarious ways. Warning: This show is incredibly addicting.
5. "Galavant"
I think by this point you've figured out that I love parody musical shows. "Galavant" is a ridiculous parody musical set in medieval times. It centers around Galavant, a broken-hearted hero who sets out on a journey to help a princess reclaim her kingdom from an evil king. Now that sounds like it's been done a million times, but this show takes all of these themes and turns them upside down! I can't say more without spoiling it, so give it a watch!
6. "Freaks and Geeks"
"Freaks and Geeks" is by far the best coming-of-age, high school show. It centers around two siblings: Lindsay, the math nerd trying to hang out with the bad kids (or "freaks) and Sam, a geeky freshman trying to find his way through high school. It's funny, but I mostly enjoyed it because it's awkward and honest. This is truly how weird and cringe-y high school kids can be. And I love how a show portrayed the kids more on the frays of the high school social hierarchy for once rather than the football players and the cheerleaders. Also, you get to see tons of well-known actors in their younger days!
