During my long winter break, I found an interest in the NBC show "The Good Place." Somehow, I watched the first three seasons series in about a week, and I absolutely loved it. Now, I'm just waiting for season four to get on Netflix. Binging this show was very easy because the show is funny and really makes you think at the same time.
This show consists of "the Good Place," which is like a version of heaven where the best of the best go to the afterlife. Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell) has made it to the Good Place and meets Michael (Ted Danson), who is the architect of the Good Place, Chidi Anagonye (William Jackson Harper), who is Eleanor's soulmate, and Tahani Al-Jamil (Jameela Jamil) and Jianyu Li (Manny Jacinto), who are Eleanor's neighbors. Eleanor believes that she was put in the Good Place as a mistake and tries to get help from Chidi so she can stay in the Good Place instead of getting sent to the Bad Place.
This show consists of many, many plot twists. Just when you think that you know what is going on, you learn something else and the show takes a turn. I'm not going to spoil any of the plot twists, but the end of season one has one of the biggest plot twists I have ever seen.
While it's a comedy, it can also get pretty emotional. Many scenes have brought me to tears, and honestly, I love it. All of the friendships combined with the balance of trying to act good or bad makes the show feel very philosophical, but the lighthearted jokes make the show feel less preachy.
As the show went on, I learned more about the meaning of life and death and how that affects your morals. The teachable moments throughout the series are very significant to the show. After watching this show, I feel like I have a better understanding of being the best version of yourself. My favorite lesson from this show is the fact that the world we live in today is a messy, complicated place, and there will always be unintended consequences, so it's hard to actually be a good person.
