It is amazing to me that a show that aired 21 years ago is still a popular topic of conversation between friend groups and families.
After the entire "Friends" series came out on Netflix this year, I finally got the opportunity to watch every episode in order. I had only seen it on Nick at Nite, or when I was little and I would bother my parents while they watched new episodes. So why has it lived on for all of these years with such success? It is easy to understand the hype; the show is completely relatable.
As we get older, it becomes easier to see how our parents related so closely to the show with their friends because now we can relate to it with ours. The humor can be cheesy and predictable at times, but it has not gone out of style. Even if it is the tenth time you have seen an episode, you can still catch yourself laughing at the same jokes.
Every character in the show has a distinct personality that makes it feel realistic. Within your friend group, I am sure that you could name a Monica, Chandler, Phoebe, Joey, Ross and Rachel.
The love lives of everyone are typical for a group of 20-somethings; the breakups, the makeups, awkward first dates, dating within the friend group and everything in-between.
Now that it is on Netflix, we can talk to our parents about how we are just starting to love a show that they discovered a long time ago. It is recognizable, hits close to home and provides a sense of comfort. It is still completely relevant; people continue to talk about and even ask for Rachel’s iconic haircut.
Everyone knows the show and everyone understands the references. It makes you laugh, it makes you cry and almost every line is quotable. "Friends" is a show that is difficult to get sick of.
We have all related to multiple episodes for different reasons:
That time you got a horrible spray tan:
When you had to get over someone who didn't even know you liked them:
When you pretended you were over someone and you looked crazy:
When your crush got a new girlfriend:
When you sit with your friends, drink coffee and reflect on the previous night:
When you tried a little too hard to get your crush to notice you:
When you really don’t want to share food with your friends:
When it takes you awhile to catch on, but when you do…
"Friends" is a classic sitcom that will always be relatable and hysterical. If you haven’t watched it all the way through yet, find out for yourself why this show is still alive and kicking.
