We Shouldn't Criticize The Digital Age

We live in a technological world, and we should stop chastizing those who embrace it.

We Shouldn't Criticize The Digital Age
Jaclyn Graybill

Everything in this day and age has gone digital. You can check in to see what the rest of the world is up to at any given moment in the day. We document our lives in photos and 140 characters or less. We live in a technological world, and we should stop criticizing those who embrace it.

To say that we should embrace the technology in our life is not to say that we should substitute genuine kindness and personality. It is not to say that we should excuse any ill behavior that comes from the use of technology- like using a phone during a conversation- but we do have to accept that it is a part of our world now. You have to be reading this on a phone, tablet, or computer, because it's published online. Odds are you have one of those on you at all times. That's how the world is now.

Young adults are constantly being criticized for their use of technology in media. Too often have I seen the phrase "Millennials these days...." followed by some criticism about how we're always on the internet. Yet, that's how our world works now! Everything is online, everything is digital, and we should be getting used to that. Many times, I find myself being ashamed or self conscious about the fact that I'm on my phone in public, even though I'm doing something practical and important, like checking my bank account or letting my family know I'm okay (You know, the life of a college student). I shouldn't have to feel that way, though. Things like phones and the internet were literally invented to help make navigating the world a little easier- so why do we criticize those that take advantage of these benefits?

The mentality to say that, "things were better when..." just isn't fair. There will always be things about the past that we love and miss, but that doesn't mean that we should snub the present. Things change, and the world will always evolve. Different does not always mean bad, and just because the world tends to move into another direction that we may not understand doesn't mean that it's getting worse. We will always claim that things were better when "the sunset was our curfew, and we only played outside", but that doesn't mean that kids who are growing up with tablets and I-Pods are at risk of a doomed childhood. That is all they know, it's not their fault. They will just experience life differently than we have.

The digital age has allowed us to live life more efficiently, opening up so many doors to new opportunities and knowledge that we may not have had access to otherwise. Just having a laptop throughout high school allowed me to do research and learn things that a textbook alone couldn't provide. Having a phone, or access to things like skype, allowed me to stay in contact with others at all times, making things like school projects accessible outside of the classroom, improving efficiency. It's what allows me to stay in contact with friends and family from 9 hours away, how I can keep up with other creators and artists around the world. Technology has allowed us to do some amazing things.

Will there always be distractions and downsides to technology? Of course. Will there always be people that abuse it? Unfortunately, yes. However, just because something is new and different, doesn't mean that it's bad. Just because some bad habits come from it, doesn't mean the whole institution is flawed. We live in a digital age, and we should start embracing it.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

"I want to thank Google, Wikipedia, and whoever else invented copy and paste. Thank you."

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.

1. Finals are weeks away, I’m sure I’ll be ready for them when they come.
