Chance the Rapper and Jeremih surprised fans by dropping a mixtape just days before Christmas titled, “Merry Christmas Lil’ Mama.” So far, the nine-track, holiday-themed mixtape has 156.1K likes on SoundCloud. Although it hasn’t broken any records, and not many people besides Chance and Jeremih fans are talking about the mixtape, a few songs should be noted.
“I Shoulda Left You,” is one of those songs. The song is essentially a reflection on 2016 and things that should be left behind. 2016 took a lot from us and the song talks about those relationships, haters and influential people who have passed away this year.
As we look ahead to 2017, here are five things that should be left in 2016.
1. Hatred and negativity
So many unfortunate events that were out of our control happened in 2016. Although we can’t go back and change things, we can start 2017 off with a kind heart. Leave the hatred and negative vibes behind. Life’s a lot more fun when you are happy and doing things that better yourself.
2. Insecurities
You are beautiful, you are worth it and you have the potential to become whatever you work toward. Don’t let worldly standards bring you down and make you feel like you aren’t enough. Leave whatever it is your insecure about in 2016 and use this year to work toward becoming confident.
3. Regrets
Many people have said this, but I’m going to say it again: life is too short to live with regrets. If it’s something you’ve already done and you wish you wouldn’t have, learn from it and move on. If it’s something you haven’t done, but want to, just do it.
4. People who bring you down
We all have people in our lives who make us feel worse about ourselves, or try to one-up us. Leave them in 2016. Don’t be afraid to cut people out of your life who aren’t helping you grow and become better. Friendship is about who lifts your spirit and makes you want to do and be better, not who you’ve known the longest.
5. Unrealistic expectations
Setting realistic and smart goals is key going into 2017. You want to set yourself up for success and can do so by setting attainable goals that will make you feel good about yourself when you achieve them, not the other way around.
