10 Reasons Why I Still Choose To Go To Planned Parenthood

They are the ones doing the good work. If that means that I will wait for over an hour for my appointment, I will wait.

When people hear that I still go to Planned Parenthood for my gynecological needs, I am met with the same question: Why? I get it. I am almost 30, I have a good paying job that provides ample benefits. I could go to a “reputable” gynecologist, but I choose not to.

Here is why (in no particular order):

1. Planned Parenthood is staffed with capable, competent and qualified doctors.

2. Because the threat to eliminate their funding is ever present.

3. They offer education on reproductive sexual health to those who may not have access to such information otherwise.

4. PlannedPparenthood was there for me when I was uninsured. I knew I could get assistance and not be met with judgment, but compassion and understanding.

5. Because our rights, as women, to have agency over our own bodies is constantly under threat.

6. They protect and advocate for a woman’s right to choose

7. Planned Parenthood is and always has been an ally for women and those of the LGBTQ community.

8. I appreciate that they ask if I have been, or am being, sexually/emotionally/physically abused, every time I go for an appointment. It is a safe place. Their service to our communities provides much more than STD testing.

9. If I am going to give my hard earned money to an institution, I’d rather it be one that I believe in whole-heartedly. It is my way of not only taking care of myself but the greater community as well.

10. Because “Planned Parenthood was founded on the revolutionary idea that women should have the information and care they need to live strong, healthy lives and fulfill their dreams — no ceilings, no limits.”

In short, they are the ones doing the good work. If that means that I will wait for an hour+ for my appointment, I will wait; Planned Parenthood needs all the support it can get. It is my way of giving back to my community, so that young girl has the support and care needed when she is most vulnerable. It is my way of ensuring that everyone has access to healthcare regardless of their socio-economic status.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
