When people hear that I still go to Planned Parenthood for my gynecological needs, I am met with the same question: Why? I get it. I am almost 30, I have a good paying job that provides ample benefits. I could go to a “reputable” gynecologist, but I choose not to.
Here is why (in no particular order):
1. Planned Parenthood is staffed with capable, competent and qualified doctors.
2. Because the threat to eliminate their funding is ever present.
3. They offer education on reproductive sexual health to those who may not have access to such information otherwise.
4. PlannedPparenthood was there for me when I was uninsured. I knew I could get assistance and not be met with judgment, but compassion and understanding.
5. Because our rights, as women, to have agency over our own bodies is constantly under threat.
6. They protect and advocate for a woman’s right to choose
7. Planned Parenthood is and always has been an ally for women and those of the LGBTQ community.
8. I appreciate that they ask if I have been, or am being, sexually/emotionally/physically abused, every time I go for an appointment. It is a safe place. Their service to our communities provides much more than STD testing.
9. If I am going to give my hard earned money to an institution, I’d rather it be one that I believe in whole-heartedly. It is my way of not only taking care of myself but the greater community as well.
10. Because “Planned Parenthood was founded on the revolutionary idea that women should have the information and care they need to live strong, healthy lives and fulfill their dreams — no ceilings, no limits.”
In short, they are the ones doing the good work. If that means that I will
