For as long as I can remember, every year around this time, I would tell people “Merry Christmas”. Most of the times people would say “Merry Christmas” back. It wasn’t until I was in high school that I noticed that some people make it a point to say “Happy Holidays”. Growing up that didn't mean anything to me. In my mind, it was another way to say Merry Christmas. Obviously, as I got older I realized not everyone celebrates Christmas. However, that didn't stop me from saying Merry Christmas. Some people would say Happy holidays in return. Some people would say Merry Christmas.
I understand why many people say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas. It makes sense. However, I think some people make much to big a deal about it. Last year, I was at the store one time and on my way out I said, “Have a nice evening, and Merry Christmas.” I expected to either hear “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Holidays” in return. Instead, the response was a very angry Happy Holidays along with “maybe you should be more considerate, not everyone celebrates THAT holiday.” I was stunned and just didn't understand. I do not have a problem with someone saying Happy Holidays. I celebrate Christmas and so I say Merry Christmas. If someone says Happy Holidays in return. I move on.
If you are Jewish and want to say "Happy Hanukkah" say it. If you celebrate Kwanzaa then tell me to have a joyous Kwanzaa. If you celebrate Christmas tell me "Merry Christmas". If you don't like any of those then just say "Happy Holidays". I will just be happy that you said something nice.
It shouldn't matter if someone says Happy Holidays or if they say Merry Christmas. If someone celebrates Christmas they should be allowed to say it. If someone doesn't celebrate it, they should be allowed to say whatever they want. Neither party should judge the other for what holiday the other celebrates.
