Should We Hold Celebrities To A Higher Standard?

Being a fan of a certain musician, actor or athlete meant following everything they did. I would look up to these people, support everything they did and aspire to be like them. When I was little, I had a huge crush on Aaron Carter. I thought he was the best pop star out there. Then, he disappeared for a few years. When he came back, I had heard that he was partying and drinking a lot. Now that I'm older, I realize he wasn't doing anything different than a lot of people his age but I remember being let down by him. This happens a lot with celebrities. So, should we hold regular people to a higher standard because they are famous?

Over and over again, I see talented people rise to fame and as soon as we know about their personal life, we criticize them for the mistakes they make. We make them seem like terrible people and just like that, they fall from grace. But when doing this we should ask ourselves an important question—would we judge our friends this harshly?

For me, the answer is no. If my friends or family members were in a fight, got drunk or said something mean to someone, I wouldn't end my relationship with them. I would question why they did something so out of character, but I would acknowledge they aren't the only ones who make mistakes. I would hope they would act with better judgement in the future but I wouldn't stop believing in them.

This is how we should react when a celebrity has a bad moment in the public eye, but we don't. Instead, we say they are a bad influence on our youth. We say the fame has gone to their head and they have "changed." While some celebrities do change when they become famous, the majority of them are just normal people. They make mistakes just like everyone else, and they shouldn't be judged for them. The only difference between us and the people we look up to is that every move they make is being watched more carefully. This puts them in a difficult situation, and it can be hard for them to live their life.

Celebrities shouldn't be held to a higher standard, but they are. They have lots of people looking up to them so they need to be careful. This means they have to watch about what they say and do. Of course they can make mistakes, but they also need to be aware that they are being watched closely. We need to make sure we don't look at them as anything more than normal people. We need to accept that people make mistakes because it is a part of everyone's life.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
