Why You Should Take Advantage Of College

These are your four years to be irresponsible.

Why You Should Take Advantage Of College

College. It's four years, eight semesters, or 32 months. It's a time that people tell us to treasure because it goes by way too fast. It's years consisting of parties, attempting to get your life together, and somehow getting by. Half of our decisions are questionable, and to the outside world, we are considered a different type of human. College is a time for new experiences, life milestones and finding ourselves. Once you graduate, you are thrown into the real world. You become a real person, have a real job with a salary (well, hopefully) and can no longer just wing it. There is a lot more to life you'll learn outside the classroom and so many reasons why you need to take advantage of these next four years.

With that said, go out on random weekday nights. Go out for tequila Tuesday or wine Wednesday (if you're 21 and older of course). You don't always have to play it safe, because nights out are far better than nights in the library. Take advantage of it while you can, because hangovers while sitting in a cubicle will be a hell of a lot worse than hangovers with your friends in a lecture hall. Honestly, our livers will not be able to handle alcohol like they can right now, which can be a reason within itself.

Spend the money you don't have. We're all in debt anyway, so what the heck. Don't pass up roommate-bonding dinners or post-class coffee with your friends. Hang out with your friends, these are the memories you'll remember, not the time you stayed in by yourself. Time isn't wasted when you're creating these memories. Let loose, do things that you will look back on and laugh about.

Do things that you love that doesn't involve school work. College isn't just for getting a degree. Join clubs for the pure reason of your enjoyment. So many opportunities are available to you, basically handed to you on a silver platter. Opportunities like these don't last forever. Do anything and everything that you've always wanted to, there are no limits, no one to tell you no, and no better time to do something but right now.

So skip class, stay out late, take a chance on the boy you like, binge-watch Netflix when you have a paper due and just relax. Stop planning, people get too busy trying to plan out 'someday' and that someday becomes today, and life passes you by. You want to be wishing you can re-live college, not re-do it.

Through all of these experiences, you'll grow and learn, and that's what college is all about. You'll eventually learn to be responsible, the consequences of your actions, and learn a lot more that the classroom can't teach you. You never know unless you try. Don't worry, you have time get your life together.

Here in front of you are four years to be irresponsible, so take advantage of it. Work never ends, but college does.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
