The Spring Awakening is the musical that Salve Theatre has chosen to perform this month. The musical had opening night on Thursday, April 7 at the Casino Theatre in Newport, RI. Directed by Reggie Phoenix, the musical is set in late 19th-Century Germany and is about sexual, educational, and other emotional turmoil’s throughout the characters' adolescence. Even though it contains some mature content, the plot is strung together well through dialogue, songs (since it is a musical), and more. The entire cast worked extremely hard for months in order to deliver an amazing show. After being able to see the show multiple times, I know that the musical is not something that you would want to miss.
The soundtrack to the musical is one of my favorite parts of the show. After watching the show, the majority of the catchy soundtrack played in my head for days. All of the cast and crew worked extremely hard in order to bring the show to an audience. Every detail of the show has been carefully worked and rehearsed between the cast and crew. These details include the lines, the lighting, the music, and non-music sounds. The set was also extremely detailed by students and the Technical Director, Pippin McGowan, who takes pride in her work at Salve Regina.
Some of the people behind the show this semester are seniors. Jen Sartanowicz is a backstage assistant for this show. In the cast, the seniors include: Hunter Nicolson, Sarah Birkhofer and Mariana Bracciale. This show will be the last show that they will be performing together in college. All of them have done an amazing job throughout their college careers, especially with this musical.
Overall, the experience of watching the Spring Awakening has been wonderful. The musical has drawn various emotions from me. During this musical I laughed multiple times, and have been driven to almost tears at points. This musical makes me hope, makes me wonder and created an experience different and stronger than simply watching a movie on television.
As an ending note, I want to say congratulations to everyone involved in the musical over the past weekend, everyone has done an amazing job to put the show together! In case you missed any of the showings this past weekend, there is a whole extra weekend of shows! The future dates of the shows include April 14-16 at 8 p.m., and April 16 and 17 at 2 p.m. The shows will be shown at the Casino Theatre on 9 Freebody Street, in Newport, RI.
