Why You Should Get Involved With FOCUS

Whether you're a new student, transfer student or returning student, it's always a good opportunity to get to know organizations on campus and find out where you fit in best.

When I came to Benedictine College, I attended the ministry fair for different organizations on campus - one of which was FOCUS.

FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) is an organization made up of recent college graduates that serve as missionaries who are dedicated to helping students grow in their walk with Christ through Bible studies, outreach events and one-on-one mentorships.

It wasn't until the fall of my sophomore year that I said "yes" to being involved with FOCUS. Between the time I first heard about FOCUS and actually got involved, It kept coming up in my life. I found out that my roommate was involved with FOCUS. She was being discipled and that seemed like such a foreign concept to me.

One day a FOCUS missionary came to our cheer practice. From that day on my life has never been the same.

Through FOCUS, I have grown tremendously in my faith and have come to realize that I have a desire to serve others in any way possible. This past Christmas break, I went on the Summit Leadership Summit (SLS) '16 with Benedictine College. I never imagined going to something like that. I learned so much about discipleship and spreading the word of God to all.

FOCUS has introduced to some of the most caring and passionate people. Shoutout to my missionary Lauren Dorsett. Thank you for all you do. Thank you for always showing me how much God loves me. Thank you for always believing in me.

There's nothing more encouraging that getting a random text asking how I'm doing or hearing someone say "I totally understand" because they've experienced or are currently experiencing the same thing as you.

FOCUS has definitely impacted my life in more ways than I thought possible. I never thought that I would be starting a bible study for my cheer team. (Keep them in your prayers!!) I never thought that I would be an Evangelization Major.

Matthew 28:19 "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit"

If you don't know what FOCUS is, I strongly encourage you to to check them out. I didn't know about FOCUS till my sophomore year and I wish I could have gotten more involved sooner.

So, see if FOCUS is at your university and consider getting involved because I guarantee you its a choice you won't regret.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
