Bills. Everyone has them and everyone has to pay them. They are an unwanted, but essential part of life, especially when the time comes to grow up and be an adult living on our own. Whether the bills are large or small, they need to be paid. The traditional way to do this is to get a job, work and earn a living to pay off these bills. However, let's imagine that you have a job, work for a small salary that will not cover all of your bills, and then you have to ask others to donate money to you to pay the rest of your bills. Or asking others to donate their time to help you work more hours to make more money. Sounds difficult doesn’t it? It sure is, but this is the way Nonprofit Organizations have to work to keep their organizations afloat.

Working for a nonprofit organization myself, my eyes have been opened as to how much help is needed from outside sources. Even though I am not part of handling the finances in any way, I interact with all of the amazing volunteers and see first hand what a donation of time or money, no matter the size, can do for the organization. I understand in today’s society a great deal of people are living paycheck to paycheck, and may be putting in extra hours to earn more income, leaving them with little time to themselves. However, giving back is very important. With so many different nonprofit organizations in the world, chances are, anyone can find one that relates to their interests and then give back to the world by helping that organization.

First, let’s start with volunteering. Non-profits usually have staff, but they cannot afford to hire and pay a salary to all of the people who are needed to help the organization run smoothly. This is where volunteers come in. No matter the length of time given, whether it be an hour one day a week, multiple days a week, or helping out with large events a few times a year, all actions and time that the volunteers give is greatly appreciated! This is the perfect option for those who may not have it in the budget to donate money right now. It is also great for people who like to get involved and be an active part of the organization. If you are a college student looking to fill some free time this summer, volunteering could be the perfect way to do so! Volunteering allows people to witness firsthand just how helpful, essential and needed they are and that can make anyone feel great! I know for a fact I would not be able to do my job without them. So to all the volunteers out there, remember how truly appreciated you are and thank you for giving your time! To those looking to give back, volunteering is a great way to do so!

Another way of helping a Non-profit Organization would be to donate money. As I stated before, whether it be a large or small amount, every little bit helps. Without gracious donations, it would be very difficult for non-profits to stay afloat. You will probably learn later on what your money was put toward and how it helped the organization as well, which is very rewarding! So, no matter the form you choose to help by, anything helps. It is important to give back to the community. And helping a nonprofit of your choice is certainly a great way to do so! So I encourage everyone to go out there and try and volunteer as much as you can because it will be a decision you will certainly not regret.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
