An Open Letter To My Best Friends

To my best friends,

you have been there for me through thick and thin. We have smiled, sobbed, and hysterical giggled through all of our days. You have been by side since the day day we met.

To Francesca, we have been best friends since we were two. Though I don’t actually remember the first time we met, I’m sure it rocked. Like going to brunch Michelle Obama level of rock.

She and I have experienced life together. We’ve grown up together, learning about ourselves and each other in the process. I’ve watched her do amazing things, she mastered the violin, gotten perfect grades, and mature into the most amazing and beautiful young women whom I am proud to call my friend. Together we have forged through the complications of youth. She has helped me sort through heartbreak, cute outfits, and the enigma that is my sexuality. Together we has built a kickass set, wrote corny music, worn matching hannah montana pjs, and all around aced the halloween game. Our days together are filled with adventures in the woods and archery mishaps. Hanging out with her brings a sense of mystery.

I never know exactly what we are going to do but I know I’ll wind up laughing so hard I snort, which will prompt her to mock my pig like laughter and cause the laughter to go on for another five minutes. Francesca has been my best friend since I was two, and I can’t wait to see where we got from here.

To Ryan, we met during a very rowdy and silly walk on the fourth day of school last year. He was quiet and pensive, and I was… Not. I babbled on and about ludicrously perverse things while the boy with us spewed spit onto the pavement like a rusty hose. I think I only saw Ryan smile twice on that walk, both small and uncertain, like he was relearning the action. After that we talked everyday, small things at first. We’d talk stupid things, mostly just topics centered around me trying to him laugh. But after a while I stopped try, he just smiled. Now we smile constantly. Throughout our friendship we have both gone through tough emotional times but we have both fought on, supported by each other and unafraid of the future. We have both come so far from last September and I am so proud of how we both have grown both as a pair and as individuals.

Both of these people have been hugely influential on my life. They have taught me how to be myself even when lost in a crowd. They have taught me how to be silly and spontaneous while being grounded in reality.

Friends come and go, but having two best friends I can always count on is amazing.

Best Friends teach you to be grateful for the deeper connections in life, the conversations that happen seamlessly, the ease of never having to hide how you feel.

So from the bottom of my heart, to my best friends, thank you for so much for being awesome.

And to everyone else, be sure to give your besties a hug!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
