"And when do you suppose I'm going to have time to prepare all the food for the party?"
"What do you mean, 'all the food for the party?'"
"I have to marinate the meat, finish up the sides, and prepare all of the appetizers. How am I supposed to get all of that done if we go away for two days before our friends come over for Christmas Eve?"
He sighs.
"See? I told you it was too much. You always go overboard. Why can't you just keep it simple? You're up until one in the morning preparing all this crap and you're exhausted."
"I'm fine. And I want to do it."
"You're not fine and no, you don't. You're all stressed out."
"I'm not stressed out!"
"Yes, you are!"
"Why can't you just let me do what I want to do?"
"Because it's too much!"
"Then let's not go to the Poconos two days before the party!"
"That's not the point. See? It is too much. Every single time we have people come over we have the same damn argument."
"Exactly! We've been doing this for what? Twenty years now? You know what it takes to host. So why do you always get so mad at me for making too much? I keep the menu the same every year."
"Yeah, and every year it's way too much! Our friends don't need to have braised beef and pork ribs and chicken wings."
"But they like it, and I want to make it for them."
"I don't care if they like it: it's just too much. And you always end up making way too much of it. We end up having leftovers for weeks! How many times do I have to tell you: if we run out, we run out."
"You know that's not right--"
"--Braised beef, mac and cheese, roasted potatoes, and the spinach salad. That's perfect for them. We don't need to be making the ribs or the chicken or the rice or the cornbread, or the coleslaw. No one even eats that."
"People eat it!"
"No they don't! Why is it so difficult for you to keep it simple?"
"Why are you getting so mad at me?"
"I'm not mad! You're the one that's getting all up in arms! I'm just saying, we don't need to prepare so much for this party!"
"We see our friends maybe four times a year. Do you not think we can put in a little extra effort for them?"
"I'm not saying that at all. Don't put words in my mouth."
"That is what you're saying."
"You know what? Fine. We just won't have them come over anymore. You tell them that this is the last year we're doing this. I'm done."
"Don't go saying things you don't mean."
"I mean it."
"Really? You're really not going to invite your friends over because it's too much work for you?"
"It's too much for you!"
"It's not too much for me!"
"Yes, it is! And now you're in a sour mood, and I don't need it!"
"Oh my God!"
"See? You're so stressed!"
"Because you're making me stressed! Why can't you just let me do what I want to do! Just let me do what I want to do!"
He unmutes the football game.
