A Short Rant About The Learning Channel (TLC)

We love it, but have we ever noticed how ridiculous it really is?

Recently while watching a TV show on The Learning Channel, I realized that the whole channel is made up of programs that single people out and get way too deep into their personal lives. I also came to the conclusion that though my previous statement may be true, viewers love that channel! I know I love that channel, and many of the shows that are aired on it- ridiculous as they may be. In case there is any confusion as to what I mean by using the word "ridiculous", allow me to explain using just a few examples:

How many shows about unusually big families do we need?

We've got Kate Plus 8, 19 Kids and Counting, Jill & Jessa: Counting On, and Quints By Surprise, name a few. All of which are about families with lots of kids. Nothing particularly special ever really happens in these shows, and yet people all across the nation still tune in every week to watch the newest episode. They just have to see which sibling said what about who, or which sibling has a new boyfriend, or just to watch them all do things people do every day, like going to the store or adopting a puppy.

Just alike, "little" families are appealing to the TLC producers.

Not only does TLC love shows about big families, they also produce shows about relatively "small" families. Viewers were introduced to Little People, Big World in 2006 and have since been introduced to quite a few other shows such as Little Couple, Our Little Family, and7 Little Johnsons. I am in no way trying to offend anyone, but really, do we need four different TV shows about little people? Again, why are their lives SO interesting??

How did they convince so many people to embarrass themselves on national television?

My 600 L.B. Life, My Strange Addiction, Sex Sent Me to the E.R. and Hoarders. Need I say much else? I mean, really people!

Who cares if a girl is 6'7"? Is that enough for them to get their own show?

I'm 5'4", why don't I get a show about my height? Am I not important enough? This feels like discrimination. #ShortGirlLivesMatter

Leave Polygamists Alone

I'm not saying I understand their life choices, I'm saying it's none of our business. If they want to live that way, let them. Don't bring a camera crew into their home(s) and publicly announce their ILLEGAL lifestyle on national television...

...Okay, so as much as I want to act like the above paragraph is really what I feel, I actually love Sister Wives, and record every new episode. Awkward.

BRING STACY AND CLINTON BACK.

I grew up watching What Not to Wear with Stacy London and Clinton Kelly. It was FABULOUS! They took people who just didn't know how to dress, and helped them. Their hair and makeup crew also put in some work, and in the end, the finished product was amazing. This is the type of show we need more of. Actually, we just need more of this show. Please.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
