This Saturday at 4:00, Shoreham Wading River made history for the third year in a row. They beat their rival, Babylon High School, with a score of 36-21, and brought home the County Championship title once again.
The tense atmosphere mirrored the emotions of the anxious fans in the second quarter when the score was tied, 14-14, but SWR’s fans never lost their energy or faith in the team that has come so far. The team pulled through in the second half thanks to many key players.
Two men made conversation about the SWR players on the long line for hot chocolate and pretzels during half time. “I don’t know any of these boys, but I keep hearing about them so my son and I decided to check them out in person.” When asked if they met his expectations, he responded with a “hell, yes!” His young son smiled beside him, clearly inspired by the awe of the game.
Senior Dean Stalzer showed his excitement about the win on the field moments after the clock ran out.
“How does it feel to be County Champs for the third year in a row?”
“Great. It feels like I won a million bucks with a lot of pain,” he remarked, while showing off all his post-game injuries.
The 2016 Shoreham Wading River Varsity Football team isn't done yet. It’s clear they have reason to celebrate but not too hard because the Long Island Championship game is coming up this Sunday.
When asked if his team is ready for the biggest game of his high school career, Stalzer responded confidently with a “Yes ma’am. We’ve been practicing and preparing ourselves all year for this game.”
To watch a team, considered an underdog not too long ago, come together for two straight undefeated seasons and three straight County Championship titles is remarkable.
So show support to your local champions and come down to the game on Sunday, 11/27/2016, at 4:00 in Stony Brook. Their rowdy and dedicated fans could always use more voices rooting for their favorite players as they face Seaford High School and hopefully bring home their 3rd straight victory.
