Are we surprised by anything anymore? We might say, "how could this happen," or "how is this possible?" but are we really surprised anymore? I think the COVID-19 outbreak might be the last straw in our desensitization. Before 2020, nobody thought that something like a worldwide pandemic was possible in today's modern world, and even if it was, we can handle it, right? We've got pretty good technology and medicine and stuff. We'd all come together to try and fix it...right?
Well, not exactly. These days, if an alien squid dropped from the sky in America and killed three million people (read Watchmen), I feel like many people's first thought instead of "HOLY SHIT" followed by repentance for all your sins would be, "I hope most of them were Trump/Biden supporters."
What would have to happen for something to truly shock us like this again? Something completely and totally outlandish like the dead walking the earth, or real-life superpowers? But then again what is outlandish these days?
I believe there was recently an article claiming that the U.S. government confirmed the existence of UFO's or "crafts not of this world." I say I believe because I can't even remember when it was because when I heard it, I barely bat an eye. And I imagine most people had a similar reaction. Aliens are now lower on humanity's concern list than getting a sudden cough or loss of taste and smell, or who the next president is going to be.
I'd also like to remind everyone that we live in a world and timeline where thousands of people organized on the internet and gathered to "storm" Area 51 because they either thought A. there were aliens in there and that they were gonna do something about it themselves, or B. that it'd be kinda fun. Is that not insane to you?
(I bet it was at least a little fun.)
