Men And Their Pride: The Downfall Of Numerous Relationships

Here’s to all the women who are tired of men who can’t voice their emotions. Here's to saying goodbye to the man who wasted your time, thoughts, and words. There is no point in waiting for a man who can’t figure out how much he needs you and wants you; never let a man make you question your importance or self worth because of a man's inability to make you a priority.

It's a Thursday night, I'm sitting in the library, staring at my pink Lilly Pulitzer planner, listening to "Since U Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson - not my proudest moment. I’ve always believed that you don’t really know someone until you go through something difficult with them, and after conquering some personal hurdles with a man I cared about by my side; I never realized that it would be his own trials that would lead him to push me away. I think it's men and their pride; the fantasy of saving the fallen maiden appeases their egos and feeds that never-ending desire for control. It’s the minute they falter – the very thought of depending or even relying in the slightest on a woman that appears to be incomprehensible.

Men and their pride: the downfall of numerous relationships. You think that you're with this honest straightforward man, but then they show you that they're everything they promised not to be. You're in a situation where even when you take control, more than likely you won't be able to decide if you're angry or upset because nostalgia always gets the best of you. You struggle to put your feelings into thoughts because of that maternal nature in every woman to not let go of those faltering and struggling. Every project is fixable to you, but sometimes people don’t want your help fixing their mistakes.

So here are my words to those men who have disappointed women for multiple reasons: never believe that the woman you hold close to your heart won’t tire of it all. You words must match up to your actions and your actions must match up to your words. Don't be the man that calls and says “I miss you” once every two weeks. Don't be the man that only checks on her when you’re worried that she’s feeling rebellious or possibly replacing you. You can’t just assume that no other man will take notice of her while you make her stand on the sidelines because you say you need figure out your "actually not so complicated life." Don’t be that man who takes for granted a woman’s care and compassion because eventually it all fades when her tears are replaced with anger and resentment.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
