Shed Thy Ego

It's time for us to be unapologetically awesome.

Shed Thy Ego

Hey there!

This week I’d like to share with y’all how freeing it can be to be unapologetically YOURSELF!

Perhaps, some of you have been letting that freak flag of yours fly since day one. If so, then rock on! But... for those of you who aren't quite sure if you've let go of that awful thing known as our, "ego" -- then let me tell you that it’s time you do.

Our egos only bring out the worst in us- the traits we possess that we despise the most (our jealousy, fearfulness, insecurity, etc.)

My proposal for the week is to find some ways in which you can leave your ego behind!

Perhaps by...

ENCOURAGING THE CHILD INSIDE.

Why are kids the only ones allowed to take things not as seriously?

Whatever happened to our ability to just “play?"

Ways to loosen up and embrace the inner child:

  • Build a kick*** fort with your friends outdoors, and spend the entire afternoon doing random cool stuff in it.
  • Bring on the scavenger hunts!
  • Go to DRAQ QUEEN BINGO (You will not regret it.)
  • Karaoke (It doesn't matter how tone-deaf or intoxicated you are, just sing.)
  • Play some great old-school board games (i.e- Sorry, Twister, Battleship, Scattergories, Blokus)

CREATING FREELY.

Don’t think about how something must turn out. Just let your mind and heart drive whatever it is you want to write, paint, sculpt, or build.

  • *Read “Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear” by Elizabeth Gilbert. It’s an awesome book that helped me understand that I mustn't put pressure on my art, and to just create because I like to create.
  • Be MESSY with your work. Paint utter nonsense. Put on some jams and get lost in the beautiful process of creation.

LETTING YOUR HANDS AND FEET GET DIRTY.

I have become a firm believer in the healing benefits of just placing one's bare feet on the earth each day and feeling it's incredible magical vibrations.

This is called "grounding." Here are two great articles about grounding here and right here.

OR

Just go outside. Connect with your surroundings Bike, run, hike, kayak, swim, walk, ski, whatever you want!

RIDE SOLO.

Go on an adventure with yourself.

A nice meditative walk in the woods?

Eat a delicious meal all by yourself. (No cell phone, no conversations, just focus on you and the food. Go slow. Take in the amazing aroma, texture, taste, and sight of your food.)

Perhaps we avoid spending time alone with ourselves because, our culture encourages extroverts more so than introverts.

OR

Maybe we are afraid to have to confront our inner thoughts and emotions. Whatever it may be, I believe it's important to have time to ourselves every day where we can reflect and be present with how we are feeling

That's all I got for today.

Shed the ego and embrace your true spirit.

As always, I am sending love, light, & peace your way!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
