Has America Forgotten About The Shaun White Sexual Assault Case?

It has been less than a year since the allegations, but it seems as though America has forgotten.

During the Superbowl, NBC put out numerous Olympic advertisements, one of them being entirely about three-time gold medalist snowboarder Shaun White. The advertisement ends with "Shaun White is the best of U.S."

But is White really the best?

Don't get me wrong, White is an impressive snowboarder, but everyone seems to be forgetting about the sexual assault allegations against him the rose up last year.

If you didn't know, Shaun White has a rock band, "Bad Things," that he started back in 2012. But drummer, Lena Zawaideh, came out last year with sexual assault allegations against White. Zawaideh was the drummer for Bad Things for seven years, and she sued White in May 2016 for breach of contract. Then in August, her lawyers advised her to seek out compensation for sexual assault.

She alleged that White sent her sexually explicit photos, forced her to watch sexually explicit videos, and even at one point, groped Zawaideh after band practice. All photo evidence, including the text messages, can be found in the 76-page court document that is easily accessed with a quick internet search.

Like I said earlier, Zawaideh was suing for breach of contract as well. This is because White kicked her out of the band because she refused to cut her hair because he wanted her to. She stood her ground an explained to him that she likes the way her hair was, long, and did not want to cut it. She even claimed that she was not paid the full amount she was promised.

With all of this, both parties reached an undisclosed settlement in May 2017. This is after White came out with a statement saying that Zawaideh needed to go under a mental health evaluation because she was claiming his actions caused her mental and emotional distress.

In her defense, how could there not be emotional distress when your boss is sexually assaulting you?

We have condemned those with sexual assault allegations against them, so how can we call White "the best of U.S."?

Although we will never know the outcome of the settlement, I have seen the text messages and photos, and I know that they are real; so I know that White did cross the line. And I also don't want to say that people can't change, but it has been less than a year since the settlement and White has not come out with any statement regarding this matter, besides claiming that Zawaideh is crazy.

While according to NBC, apparently "Shaun White is the best of U.S." I have to disagree.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
