With so many social network outlets, it's not uncommon to see comments everywhere you turn on how people today wear too much makeup. From Internet comments to face-to-face judgement, no form of makeup-shaming is OK.
I've been in conversations with girls who brag about not wearing makeup because “they don't need it.” And I could feel tension rise as I told them how much I love makeup. It's strange to me that even women today shame other women because of how much makeup they wear.
The power of makeup movement started when NikkieTutorials posted a YouTube video doing only half of her makeup to show how she looked with and without makeup. She posted this video to show those who shame makeup that she doesn't wear makeup to impress other people; she wears makeup to make herself feel more beautiful.
Shortly after this video was made the hashtag #powerofmakeup quickly grew more popular. Young women and men everywhere posted pictures of themselves with no makeup and with makeup to share their personal stories of how makeup has helped them.
“You look so much better without makeup,” “that's way too much makeup” or “if you look different without makeup on you're lying to people” are just a few of the comments made by people who shame makeup. Many people wear makeup simply because it's fun to do makeup and others wear it because it makes them feel more beautiful. No matter the reason for wearing makeup, no one deserves to be shamed for it.
