Stony Brook University Has Been Shady AF Lately And I'm So Ready To Split

Thank goodness I'm graduating in May this year; there's too much happening to be ashamed of for me to want to stay another second longer.

I'm normally proud to be a Seawolf, but things are getting a little fishy around here.

First of all, a round of applause for garbageman Sacha Kopp (AKA "Confrontation Avoidance Specialist") who is finally resigning as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. It's been a long time coming and a change that SBU desperately needs.

Kopp is notorious for hiding in the face of student activism and questioning regarding recent program and faculty cuts. Instead of making himself available to answer questions from, yes, upset students, he cancelled meetings. A total no-show at the last minute. AND he had security waiting for the students outside of his office.

Not good, dude.

On top of that hot pile of Absolute Mess™, it's come to light that the university has some explaining to do regarding its spending.

According to Newsday, "Stony Brook Foundation Inc., the university’s fundraising arm, was cited for questionable transactions and loose oversight" in a statewide audit of SUNY schools.

What the hell are you doing with all that money, SBU? Could it have been used to keep some adjunct professors on board had you handled it properly? Could you have maintained the undergrad pharmacology program instead of kicking it to the curb?

Thank goodness I'm graduating in May this year; there's too many shameful things happening for me to want to stay another second longer. My positive view of my university is being tarnished by... well, the university itself.

Do right by your students. Do right by your staff. Stop being shady and show us we can be proud to be Seawolves again.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

It's not all morning coffees and singing along to the radio.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!
