As a college student, it is hard not to witness the things that happen around you.
In most cases, you hear about it and then forget about it the next day. However, this often happens in cases of sexual assault and violence, as well. Too many people hear of what is going on but are too afraid, or simply choose not to speak up.
Being on a college campus, not everything can be completely monitored all the time. That's where we, as students, have to make sure to protect ourselves and others in case something were to happen. It is up to us to make sure that those who are victimized know that they are not alone and that they have people around them to help.
I know for the victim, realizing the reality of the problem is often difficult to comprehend, and it's even more difficult to talk about. It's a tough situation to be in, and it's extremely difficult to move on from it.
Victims also don't always know their options. They often think they will be one to blame in some situations, and so instead of reporting the issue, they hide it from everyone while it eats away at their soul.
I don't know the best way to deal with it, but I know keeping it all inside of you and letting all the thoughts and emotions build up is not the way to go. Yes, it is definitely easier to do that then communicate with someone, but it's worse for personal health. Situations like these take a toll on the mental and emotional health of the people who have to deal with this.
I don't know much about these situations, or how to make it stop, but I do know that reporting these cases is a start. It is important to be there and protect others, whether you know them or not.
And if you know of someone, or even just think someone has been sexually assaulted, don't stay quiet about it. Go to someone who can help them and get things fixed. In the end, it will be a much better feeling for the victim, as well as those around the victim who love and support them,
