We’ve all seen movies in which sex is molded into something that it’s not. Whether that be an overly negative, unrealistically positive or comically inaccurate representation, these scenarios influence our opinion on how sex and relationships should be in real life. So, let’s talk about sex…
"Don't have sex, because you will get pregnant and die! Don't have sex in the missionary position, don't have sex standing up, just don't do it, okay, promise? Okay, now everybody take some rubbers." - Coach Carr
Hopefully no one actually took this seriously when Coach Carr said it, but you never know. Only about 650 women in the United States per year die from pregnancy related complications (source) and though, in my mind, this statistic should be lower than it is, pregnancy obviously isn’t a death sentence.
He’s Just Not That Into You
"We are all programmed to believe that if a guy acts like a total jerk that means he likes you." – Gigi Phillips
I’ve heard this one countless times. But by now, we’ve grown up and should have more emotional maturity to treat a significant other with respect. If this still holds true, then find another man to be with, ladies.
Sex and the City
“Ugly sex is hot. Some of the best sex I've had is with people I can't stand.” - Anthony Marantino
Sex and the City is notoriously known for it’s great, and sometimes not so great, sex and dating advice. While I am guilty of agreeing with many of the dumb things that Carrie and her group of best friends say, I don’t exactly agree with this one.
Bridesmaids Interaction between Annie and Ted
[As Annie gets out of his car and starts walking]
Ted: You know, if you're trying to turn me on, it's working!
[She ignores him and keep on walking]
Ted: You used me! No big deal!
[Shouts out to her as he drives away from her]
Ted: You are no longer my number three!
In the movie, Ted and Annie hookup a few times, but it is obvious that she wants more that just a hookup and he doesn’t. However, in my opinion, anyone who blatantly disrespects you does not deserve to be sleeping with you. And if they call you their number three, I hope you’d have enough respect to walk away from them as Annie did to Ted.
50 Shades of Grey
“If you struggle, I’ll tie your feet too. If you make a noise, Anastasia, I will gag you.” – Christian Grey
With the release of 50 Shades of Grey on Valentine’s Day, there’s been quite an uproar regarding the relationship being portrayed by the main characters, Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey. As much as I’d love a wealthy, handsome millionaire to sweep me off of my feet, I do no think that the way Christian treats Anastasia, when it comes to both her physical and emotional well being, is safe. The relationship that they have should not be idolized; rather it should serve as an example of what we shouldn’t get involved in.
I think the main point I’m trying to get across with these examples is that we need to be weary of how the media portrays relationships. Relationships should be meaningful, and one should feel both emotionally and physically safe, in addition to feeling respected. So, the next time you get involved with someone, make sure your relationship isn’t comparable to any of these scenarios.
