It broke — a phrase that sends shockwaves of panic through thousands of females each year. If only these females were taught from the very beginning that when contraception fails, or even if they are raped, there are options that exist to try and prevent pregnancy. Although there are many pro-lifers that believe that emergency contraceptives are abortion pills and its use should not be made available in any circumstance, a woman has the right to her own body, including when it is ready to handle a child. In addition, schools should make females aware that this is an option for them, and not consider sex ed a form of taboo. While this would be problematic for those who believe life begins at conception, schools would thereby be teaching its students to terminate pregnancies, that these pills prevent an egg from being fertilized before a pregnancy even happens — a fact that all women should know from early on. The law should not be altered to deny women the right to her body and/or the knowledge of how her body functions.
Plan B is one of the most popular forms of emergency contraception and is recommended as one of the most effective types of this kind of pill. Although in most schools they do not educate their students about this being available to them once they reach the age of 16, many doctors remind their female patients that it is available for purchase should a condom break, slip, or be absent during sex. It can also be taken in many other cases, such as if a girl is raped. Although it does not prevent the spread of STDs, it "helps prevent nearly seven out of eight potential pregnancies" since its creation in the late '90s.
Plan B needs to be taken “less than 72 hours after failed contraception or unprotected sex.” Any time longer after that, it is less likely to work. The sooner you take it, the better the odds are that the sperm will not be able to fertilize an egg. There are arguments from people who are pro-life that this is a form of abortion, claiming that this egg could have had a chance of living and now it is unable to.
There has been an establishment of separation of church and state for the reason that laws cannot be based on anything that is abstract. Long ago, the United States established that the government cannot rule the country based on religious beliefs. Therefore, it is illegal to alter the law to state that life begins at conception since this is statement is based on words from the Holy Bible. Although politicians have argued that science has shown life to begin at the time of fertilization, this is extremely hard to document. One cannot claim a pregnancy was aborted if one did not occur in the first place. Even if the egg had been fertilized and an emergency contraceptive stopped it from developing, that egg would not be able to survive on its own. The conversation of sex should no longer be something a female or male is ashamed to discuss. When it comes to one’s health, teens are often naive unless they ask his/her doctor sex-related questions because schools suppress us from learning this kind of information. Students need to be taught that taking Plan B as directed by the label has no major side effects, and should be accessible to those who need it. This right cannot be taken away from us — and the law should not be changed in order to say it should.
