You’ve all heard of the Great Wall of China, Christ the Redeemer and the Taj Mahal, but what if you don’t have the money to fly to all these places? Lucky for you, there are many wonders of the United States, that I’m sure you haven’t been to.

From man-made objects to natural wonders, America has a vast history of these places that serve more than just something pretty and large to look at. The significance of every wonder serves to resemble the different eras of the United States, our ideals, improving infrastructure, and play into a new age of tourism.

1. Statue of Liberty

Standing on Ellis Island in New York City, New York at three-hundred and five feet tall is the Statue of Liberty, which was given to America by the French in 1885 and was accepted in a ceremony by President Grover Cleveland. It took about a year to travel to America and the numerous pieces had to be resembled. The statue stands as a symbol of freedom and democracy for Americans.

2. Mount Rushmore

In the breathtaking black hills of South Dakota, four Presidents heads stand on the side of a rock mountain: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. The sculpture was completed in 1941. It took nearly twenty years to finish and was created under very dangerous conditions of exploding rock to structure the faces. There was much debate over who the fourth face should be, much talk was of Lewis and Clark, Custard and Red Cloud Sioux Chief. It was decided to carve the four Presidents to promote unity in America and stand as a symbol of hope through America’s founders.

3. Hollywood Walk of Fame

In Hollywood, California on Vine Street and Hollywood Boulevard are the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The idea came about in the 1950s to represent the glory and prestige of the film industry and show the impact that these celebrities have had on American culture. Interestingly enough, there is even a time capsule buried underneath the star walk that was placed by Bob Barker. Even the history of this place is just amazing, as it is a requirement that the star attends their own dedication ceremony, hundreds have celebrities have stood where these stars lie.

4. Grand Canyon

In Arizona, the Grand Canyon became a forest reserve in 1893 and finally a national park in 1919. The Canyon is a mile deep and about 270 miles long, it is even visible from space. The layers of rock are said to be eroded from the Colorado River and estimate the canyon is five to six million years old. Being so old helps Americans think about the geological stages that the United States has gone through long before it was inhabited by us.

5. Seattle Space Needle

It only takes a forty-one-second ride up to six-hundred and five feet to see the city of Seattle. The structure was built in 1962 during the World Fair. It was created during an American boom in the interest of space and its adventure. The structure symbolizes futuristic aspirations and the technological advances America hopes to lead in the coming years.

6. Golden Gate Bridge

The Gold Rush in 1849 brought a high population west, especially to San Francisco. It was a long process to get the suspension bridge built. Engineers faced many financial issues for funding, bonds backed by banks, and the Great Depression in 1929. Since the War Department owned both sides of the land where the bridge was to be built, every decision had to be approved by them. The bridge was finally opened in 1937 and was the longest bridge in the world at this time, one mile long. The Golden Gate Bridges represents innovation and determination in America’s booming architectural period.

7. Washington Monument

In honor of one of the most influential founding fathers of America, the Washington Monument in Washington D.C. began construction in 1848, becoming the tallest structure in D.C. At the laying of the cornerstones were many influential people like the wives of Madison and Hamilton, Abe Lincoln, Johnson, and President Polk. Not noticeable from a distance, the structure is actually two different colors of white because of the stop of constructing and transition from a private project to a public one.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
