Seven Things You’ll Miss When You’re At College

By: Sylvia Jarrus

You’ve been waiting all summer for move in day, and now you’ve been settled in and adjusting to your new surroundings and you’re ready for the best years of your life. A new environment, full of new people to meet and opportunities to be had. Even for the most independent student there will be things you miss back home no matter how ready for college you are.

Your Pets

It’s hard to leave your furry friend behind. You’ll probably be worried they’ll forget about you and when you move in it will hit you that you might not see them for weeks or months. Have your family send you pictures of them every once in awhile.

Your Hometown

The familiarity of where you grew up and moving to a totally new environment can be difficult. You might miss going to your favorite coffee shop or browsing that boutique where you always spend too much money. The good news is in no time you’ll have a favorite shop in your new college town.

Your Family

No matter how frustrated or angry you feel with your family you will miss them. It’s a privilege to have people in your life that care about you and have seen you grow up. Moving away is a big transition for you and your family so it’s important to keep in touch and call your parents at least once a week to let them know how you’re doing.

Your Friends

It’s strange to see your friends part ways and start their own lives. Your relationships might change and you won’t talk as often or see them as much as you’d like. It’s good to make plans to meet and catch up over breaks during the school year to keep those old friendships alive. College is the perfect opportunity to make new friends and meet all sorts of people so don’t let old high school friendships hold you back.

Your Bed

You never realize how comfortable your own bed is until you have to sleep on another one. Make sure to invest in a quality mattress pad and bring your favorite pillows to make you feel more at home in your dorm.

Your Favorite Meal

Cafeteria food gets old quickly, and you’re going to miss having a home cooked meal. You’ll be surprised how old eating out gets not to mention expensive for a college student’s budget. Make sure on trips home to take some of that delicious dish your mom makes back with you to campus.

Your Privacy

Between your one or more roommates filtering in and out of your dorm, going to class, community bathrooms, participating in clubs and sports it’s almost impossible to have some quality alone time. Try to find a quiet place on campus where no one usually is, or schedule your classes around your roommate's schedule so you’re not always in your dorm at the same time. Or even venture out of campus at least once a week to recharge. It’s important to get some alone time and allow yourself to just be able to breathe and think without other people crowding around you.

Now that Halloween is over, it's time to focus on the Holiday Season. Don't get me wrong, I think Thanksgiving is great and can't wait for it, but nothing gives me greater joy than watching Freeform's 25 Days of Christmas, lighting peppermint scented candles, decking the halls, and baking gingerbread cookies. So while we approach the greatest time of the year, let's watch the 15 best Christmas movies of all time.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.
