7 Things I Miss Most About Home

Everyone misses home sometimes.

7 Things I Miss Most About Home

In my very first article for Odyssey, I talked about the many things I have gained from moving away from home for college. And while all those things remain true, I cannot deny that I miss my hometown of Portland, Oregon, fairly often. Now I know I'm speaking to a bunch of Seattleites here, but I maintain my Portland pride, despite the pressure. And here's why:

1. The Oregon Coast.

Rain or shine, there is no denying the beauty of the Oregon Coast. Miles of sandy beaches and cute little towns but an hour from Portland make this the perfect place to get away for the weekend. Sorry Washington, you just don't have beaches like this!

2. The views.

Right up the street from my house is what is known in my little corner of Portland as 'The Bluff". Looking west, you not only get to see the city through all the seasons, you get to watch some of the most incredible sunsets.

3. The Willamette River.

I grew up just minutes from the Willamette River, and contrary to popular belief, it is one of my favorite spots. From the water, you get a full view of downtown Portland and if you're feeling up to it, you can paddle between the many beautiful bridges that line the water.

4. The city life.

I never really considered myself a city girl until I lived somewhere smaller than Portland. Although Portland's actually pretty big, it doesn't feel that way. And you can find spots all over the city that give you incredible views like this.

5. The diverse food.

Portland is by far my favorite city to eat in. From Slappy Cakes to Waffle Window, the food carts, and the many different districts... You have a lot to choose from!

6. You're never bored!

This is another spectacular view that cannot be missed when you are in Portland! Council Crest Park is in the West Hills and is one of the many parks to visit. With many walking and hiking trails, and more parks than you can count, I can guarantee you won't ever be bored.

7. How weird Portland is.

From Darth Vader on a unicycle to people walking their pet chickens. There is no telling what you might see on your average day in Portland. But it's quirky, loving community will welcome you with open arms!

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
