After a heart-breaking end to the 2015 season the Green Bay Packers are ready to move on and start the 2016 year. The Packers struggled offensively last season, a rarity in the Aaron Rodgers era, but health and new weapons should change that. The Packers have the talent to be the best team in the NFL, and should be a favorite to win the Super Bowl. Here are the seven players that will make or break the Packers in 2016.
1. Eddie Lacy
Much was made about Lacy's weight and subsequent loss over the offseason, perhaps the biggest story of the Packers time off. Lacy has the potential to be a top running back in the league, and will hopefully regain his former combination of speed and power. When Lacy is effective the offense is much more effective as defenses can not blitz as often as they did last year, knowing the running game's ineffectiveness. If Lacy does not regain his former status, James Starks showed flashes of brilliance, but is better suited to be a number two/ third-down back.
2. Jared Cook
The Packers offense is best when Rodgers has a reliable tight end to throw to down the middle. Jared Cook has the skills to be this for the Packers. Cook said he is excited to play with a skilled quarterback like Rodgers, and Packer fans are surely excited to have him.
3. Jeff Janis
Janis emerged in a major way in the incredible yet soul-crushing NFC Divisional game with seven catches (including TWO Hail Mary's on the final drive) for 145 yards and two touchdowns. Devout cheeseheads pondered why Coach McCarthy never played Janis all season, (especially when the biggest problem with the offense was the lack of a speedy receiver to stretch the field) but this year Janis could, and should, be a major part of the Packers offense. His main competition for the number three receiver spot will be the disappointing Devante Adams, which will hopefully push the pair to be the best they can be, creating a ideal and unstoppable corp of Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, Janis, Adams and Ty Montgomery/Jared Abbrederis.
4. Jayrone Elliot
As the president of the Jayrone Elliot Fan Club, it baffles me how Elliot did not get more playing time last season. He is a proven playmaker, and seems to be always able to get some pressure on the opponent's quarterback, something the Packers are desperate for. If Elliot gets more time this year, he could prove himself as an important part of the Pack's sometimes stagnant defense.
5. David Bakhtari
Bakhtari can best be described as an inconsistent blocker. That won't be acceptable if the Packers are to be at their best. Bakhtari has struggled against good pass rushers, leading to some frightening hits on Rodgers. This season he will be the teams starting left tackle, and will need to defend Rodgers against dangerous rushers such as Ziggy Ansah, Michael Bennett and J.J. Watt. If he succeeds, the Packers should be fine. If not, there could be trouble.
6. Quinten Rollins
Rollins played very well in his rookie season. This year, he will be pushed to the third cornerback position with the loss of Casey Hayward. Rollins seems to be up to the challenge and, along with fellow second year man DeMarious Randall, become the future of the Packers young and hungry secondary.
7. Jake Ryan
The biggest question for the Packers this year is the middle linebacker position. Will Sam Barrington and Jake Ryan play well enough to allow Clay Matthews to play his normal outside position? Barrington has injury problems, but has played well, and Ryan has been caught making key mistakes. If Ryan can improve the entire defense will be able to function at its highest capacity.
Packers fans, we're in for an interesting, and hopefully successful season. Let me know which players you think are key in making this season a great one.
