I may never experience what it may be like to be homeless, or what it may be like to live in a third world country, but I know that with one smile or with one day serving the homeless in Detroit, I can make a difference in somebody's life. It isn't about reaching the millions of people. Go after the one. Serving others to make a difference is a great feeling and here's why:
1. Spreading God's love through myself.
Serving others opens up a side of me that isn't originally there. Loving on people, you don't even know is the most rewarding thing because it is what Jesus would do. Serving others is literally acting as the hands and feet of Jesus.
2. People are way less fortunate than I am.
Going through life and being able to have so many eye-opening experiences has really helped to shape me as a person. Having the opportunity to feed the homeless twice a month, to put on a week-long camp for foster children, and to travel across the globe on multiple mission trips has opened my eyes on how blessed I truly am. I see how others live and how little they have and it makes me want to give more out of the goodness of my heart rather than the obligation to give.
3. Seeing others light up when we give.
Seeing homeless people smile when we give them food, seeing the pure joy on the foster kids' faces as they catch a fish for the first time, or seeing the impoverished Dominican boy in tears because he had the chance to hear about Jesus are the best feelings in the world. Getting to see that our message is coming across to people so well makes all the difference.
I do what I do purely out of the kindness of my heart. As Christians, we were not placed on this Earth to judge and condemn those who are less fortunate. We were put on this earth to be a light to those who are lost. To show them that someone loves them despite all of their downfalls and imperfections. To show them that they have someone to go to during the hard times. To show them there is a God in Heaven who has a life planned out for every single person on this Earth.
The more I give of myself and my time, I am reminded how important it is to I share this message that makes me who I am today. Instead of going to save the millions, aim for the one because it truly can make a difference in your life and theirs.
1 Samuel 12:24
But be sure to fear the LORD and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you.
