The United States is one of the most opportunistic countries and has always been a destination for many people across the world. People who have faced the worse in their nation or who want to uplift their standard of life seek to take advantage of such an opportunity. To do so they find one or the other way to get here, which includes illegal immigration. Due to this invasion of foreign people, the natural citizens losing their opportunities for employment have been trying numerous ways to stop it. It might be logical to believe that stopping the services to such undocumented people could work as a demotivating factor. However, the paper I reviewed thinks otherwise.
People who illegally immigrate don't necessarily come here for services. They are here mainly for the opportunity level that they didn't have in their hometown. As the paper notes, "As long as there are employers willing to hire and there are jobs in the state, people will still migrate." In addition to this, the job market is unwilling to let the government enact laws that ban them from hiring undocumented immigrant employees. This means that they have been hugely contributing to the economy.
However, the services provided to them are still scrawny. This will have a huge negative impact on society. First, it will create a sub-class of people which means an increase in poverty and crime rates. In addition to this, the aftermaths of it will tend to be more costly than proactive actions. This can be clearly seen in the health sectors.
To prevent these problems, we need to provide two major basic services: education and health. Education is one of the primary necessities for a qualitative society and will be highly beneficial if we can give it to undocumented immigrants. We can create a more literate labor market as well as fill up the vacant skilled jobs. Furthermore, health services can be a major plus point. As written in the paper, "It is cheaper to provide treatment to undocumented mothers than to a premature infant." With the fear of deportation, undocumented people tend to avoid going to health services. Hence, this will have a huge negative impact from expenditure to the spread of diseases.
All in all, denying services to such immigrants will not demotivate their illegal entry to the States. We can have other ways to do so by tightening border security, lottery visas and so on. As per the research done in the paper, denial of services leads to bigger devastating losses compared to the loss of employment. Therefore, by providing services to undocumented immigrants, we can have a better version of the USA with enriched culture and high-quality citizens.
