A song that is often sang at many churches and church camps is called Make Me A Servant.
When you see those words what do they mean to you? Do they mean to serve yourself or serve others to serve God? This story is about a group of individuals who wanted to go the extra mile at a children's home ; to serve others just as Christ served, and how they were transformed by the events that have happened to them and how they used it for God's purpose.
Psalms 116:16 (KJV) O LORD, truly I am thy servant; I am thy servant, and the son of thine hand-maid: thou hast loosed my bonds.
Brittney, Steven, Danielle, Kevin, and Sarah were on a mission trip at a children's home helping with repairs to some of the houses that were damaged due to high winds. During their mission trip to this home they all became friends with some of the children at the home and learned a little bit about their personality and their backgrounds. This group of individuals were given an opportunity to spend some alone time with these children and learn through their stories. On the first afternoon a little boy named Cory came up to Kevin and their friendship was immediate. Cory started telling Kevin about his recent battle with cancer while living at the home. Immediately his eyes were filled with tears as he listened to the story and through the tears asked him what helped him get through? His response was what the whole group needed to hear throughout the week and that was :
Psalm
138:1-8 (NIV) I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart; before the
“gods” I will sing your praise. I will bow down towards your holy temple
and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness, for you
have exalted above all things your name and your word. When I called,
you answered me; you made me bold and stout-hearted. May all of the
kings of the earth praise you, O LORD, when they hear the word of your
mouth. May they sing of the ways of the LORD, for the glory of the LORD
is great. Though the LORD is on high, he looks upon the lowly, but the
proud he knows from afar. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you
preserve my life; you stretched out your hand against the anger of my
foes, with your right hand you save me. The Lord will fulfil his
purpose for me; your love, O LORD, endures for ever—do not abandon the
works of your hands.
These words stuck with Kevin and the group throughout the rest of their mission trip at the children's home. That evening Sarah, Brittney, Steven, Danielle and Kevin were working on a group project with some of the older girls and boys at the home for a special skit that they were getting ready to perform the next evening for the other children at the home to show the younger children how God can use prayer and the different stories of each person to create a beautiful picture. As the night went on and they finished working on the skit with the children they started singing praises to God by the camp-fire at the children's home and several of them had tears in their eyes for they felt God's presence at the camp-fire at the children's home. The next day an older girl named Dianna was spending some alone time with Sarah and as they were having a conversation they realized that they both had something else in common besides GOD; and that was that they actually grew up down the street together. Sarah realized that it was the same Dianna that she went to school with tears filled her eyes as well and later on that evening all of the children were getting ready for worship service at the camp-fire unaware that the service at the camp-fire would be the special skit; that the individuals that were on the mission trip helped to put together to show the younger children the power of God and how he took their stories to make a difference in the lives of others.
These five individuals were building friendships that would last and by listening to the stories of the children in the home their relationship with God grew stronger as with each individual they met, they spent time getting to know who they were, praying and crying together and serving together to repair the damage at the home. As they went on through the rest of the week Steven and Danielle were talking to Allen who decided to put Christ on in baptism after supper that Thursday afternoon. Steven is a youth minister and Danielle is his wife and as they spoke with the house-parents, they all decided that they wanted to let Steven baptize him for throughout the week him and his wife has been studying with him along with the house-parents. Every individual that they met explained their stories to them and showed them what it truly meant to have a servant heart to serve CHRIST!
Ephesians 6:23-24 (HCSB) Peace to the brothers and love with faith; from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace be with all who have undying love for our Lord Jesus Christ.
During the duration of the trip while trying to repair the damage done to the home, they became forever friends with the children and house-parents and the rest of the staff along with listening to the stories that showed them the true power of prayer and what it truly meant to have a servant heart for God by using the older children to set the example for the younger children and to show them that age does not matter and to be a servant for Christ and through their examples and listening to their stories transformed the individuals on the team for the rest of their lives and through those children learned what it truly means to have a Servant Heart for Christ willing to share their lives with others and help others that may be in the same situation throughout the home. Their examples and the service that they continue to do at the home to serve others as well as to serve God, giving HIM the glory that he truly deserves by showing them the bigger picture giving them a picture of a true servant heart for CHRIST.
Brittney, Steven, Danielle, Kevin and Sarah were forever grateful for that mission trip that changed their hearts forever to transform into true servants for Christ as well as to have that servant heart like the children that they met on the mission trip along with them each growing closer to God throughout the journey and they continued their friendships they met on that mission trip for it taught them what it truly meant to be a servant for God and others and truly transformed their lives and their relationship with God the Father.
What does having a Servant Heart for Christ mean to you and are you being a servant to God by being a servant to others?
Please Make Me A Servant Lord for you are a servant and I want to serve you and others for you were a servant and please give me a servant heart. A-men.
Romans 15:13 (NIV) May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
