In our generation, podcasts can be considered unpopular; with all the other apps we have on our iPhones, most don't even know we have an app specifically dedicated to them. I was placed into the category of being unaware of podcasts until I heard the buzz about "Serial." All of a sudden I was out of the loop. I had somehow skipped over the biggest podcast debut in the fall of 2014 that left everyone on the edge of their seats. Naturally, I played catch up.
"Serial" is a byproduct of the radio program "This American Life." This series is divided into 12 different episodes that cover a specific murder mystery taking place in 1999. At first, I had no idea this was nonfiction. I thought Sarah Koenig (the woman behind it all) crafted a story centered around a high school murder. Once I found out all the events were real, I was hooked.
Hooked might even be an understatement. I was completely enveloped. I listened to the podcasts throughout my workouts, errands, and even while completing school work. I felt I could empathize with Sarah Koenig as I followed her portrayal of the story. Upon the reveal of new evidence, I experienced her excitement, and I felt frustration when conclusions about the case couldn't be made. It was almost as if I was right there with her working to uncover the mysterious death of teenager Hae Min Lee.
I also became infatuated with Sarah Koenig herself. I couldn't believe she wasn't an experienced lawyer, but instead an investigative journalist. Koenig was eloquent in her descriptions of her case, she was unbiased and considered all options, and she was, above all, honest. She became the greatest narrator, the type that could explain the story in a way that allowed you to see images and the situation unfold in your head. Further, she was extremely diligent in her research. Koenig and her team exhausted all avenues to increase the amount of evidence for the case, making each episode juicy with new details and always leaving you wanting more.
Since finishing the 12 episodes in less than a week, I haven't really known what to do besides trying to find a similar podcast. So far I've had no such luck. However, I'm still remaining hopeful. It has been revealed that "Serial's" season two is set to premier this fall, and with another season following that. Overall, if you haven't heard about "Serial" or podcasts in general, it's time to start. Your new addiction is one app away. Happy listening!
