So sudden and intense
Like a summer storm you exist
The rain gliding down my cheeks
A touch of metal I couldn’t resist
I can’t always fathom nature’s plans
But that’s the beauty of it all
The leaves changed colors
And that was the fall
Before I knew it
Winter took a stand
And faster than the rain of summer,
Spring took my hand
I found what I never knew was missing
Building among the seasons
With strength to thank the summer
For creating a storm with reasons
So now sweet serendipity
Don’t leave me to wallow in my mind
Let truth be told you’ll never leave
For I couldn’t harbor a loss of that kind
I wrote this poem before I really knew love, but I had a feeling… I knew these metaphors would lay out how it one day would be, because I spent so many days learning how it wouldn’t. Now, having the chance to publish it a couple of years later, after finding these words buried in my desk drawer and experiencing the wonderful depths of love, this is it. This is love. It’s unexpected, it’s perfectly imperfect. Life is constantly changing and throwing obstacles at us, but this person becomes your world and you battle the storms for that reason. They carry you through the seasons of life, through the good and the bad. In the end, you never want to lose that person, you honestly can’t imagine your days without them. So take risks, take the fall. What a pleasant surprise they will be, and how you will learn that life is in fact uncertain and love has its flaws, but it’s deeper than all of the blemishes; it’s beautiful.
